These were a series of reports (or Anti-Reports as they called them) produced
by a group called Counter Information Services between 1972 and 1983. CIS were
a collective of journalists dedicated to publishing information not covered or
collated by the established media. Their aim was to investigate the major
social and economic institutions of Britain. The Anti-Reports were
well-researched and readable journalistic investigations of major private
sector companies, the public sector and contemporary political issues. They
marshalled large amounts of research data in support of their arguments about
the influence, power and changing nature of British capitalism.
From number 10 onwards the reports were produced in co-operation with The
Transnational Institute (www.tni.org), founded in 1974 as a worldwide
fellowship of committed scholar-activists. A number of other reports were
produced in co-operation with organisations as listed below. Special reports
were produced from time to time eg a series of four on the 1976 British
economic crisis. At its peak CIS was producing a report every couple of months,
but this tailed off as the 1970s came to an end.
CIS was based in 52 Shaftesbury Avenue, London and later at 9 Poland Street,
London. More information on those involved would be welcomed.
The WCML holds all but one of the series. If anyone has a copy of NHS Condition
Critical (No. 26) they could donate, please contact us.
