Location : WCML

Start date : 3rd December 2010

End date : 26th January 2011

The second step in a collaboration between Islington Mill Studios and the Library, Object Lessons exhibits at the Library from Friday 3 December until Wednesday 26 January (Wednesdays to Fridays 1pm to 5pm).

In October, the gallery at Islington Mill became a workroom fitted and filled with everyday ephemera from the Library collections which served to demonstrate how far political passions may become embedded in the substance of daily life. For two weeks a group of seven artists worked within the gallery space producing responses to these items, considering the ideas they embody, and their motives for production. The products of this process are now to be exhibited at the Library. These art works - of diverse practices including illustration, ceramics, print, and performance - take the collection as a starting point to consider the themes ofidentity, protest, collecting and preservation. Reawakening the archive, they are contemplations on the resonance of the Library today.

Participating artists are Christine Baldwin, Amy Pennington, Matthew Walkerdine, Jess Higgins, Fraser Chapman, Anna Beam, David Bailey and Maurice Carlin.
