A brief historyNational Union of General and Municipal Workers plaque

1889 - National Union of Gas Workers and General Labourers of Great Britian and Ireland was formed.

1912 - changed name to the National Union of Gas and General Workers.

1916 - changed name to the National Union of General Workers. Between 1890-1916 there were many mergers with lots of smaller general unions

1924 - amalgamated with the National Amalgamated Union of Labour and the Municipal Employees Association to become the National Union of General and Municipal Workers.

1974 - changed name to the General and Municipal Workers' Union

1982 - amalgamated with theAmalgamated Society of Boilermakers, Blacksmiths, Shipbuilders and Structural Workers to become the GMB.
