Our 'Future Fund' fundraising appeal
The Library supports understanding of the changes that are going on NOW'
The Working Class Movement Library in Salford needs your support. We are recognised at home and abroad as one of Britain's most important collections of working class history. We are open for everyone to use without charge. The breadth and depth of the archives, books and artefacts makes the Library a vast and unique collection, capturing the stories and struggles of ordinary people's efforts to improve their world. Tony Benn has called us ‘one of the greatest educational institutions in Britain'.
'Everyone at the Library was so helpful and the resources were so exciting'
Thanks to our hugely successful Heritage Lottery Fund project to make the Library more open and accessible, the number of people visiting us has gone up more than fivefold in three years, and our volunteer team figures are at an all-time high.
We want to maintain this exciting impetus - and so the support of everyone who wants to see our working class heritage preserved and promoted is vital.
The Library's importance is summed up by a couple of quotes:
From a volunteer - ‘It's an opportunity to help to preserve, extend and share with as many people as possible a resource bank which is bursting with inspiring exemplars, narratives and brilliantly reasoned arguments in support of peace, social justice and equality'
From a reader - ‘Without the help that I got from the staff at the WCML in the early days, I don't think I would have written the thesis that I have...The thesis has now taken me to many libraries all over the country and even the world - but none quite so friendly as the WCML'.
To maintain the momentum of the huge increases in usage of the Library over the last few years, we need to raise an extra £80,000 each year. Can you help?
Our founders Ruth and Eddie Frow started the Library in their own home, driven by the belief that working people should remember and value their own history. Together they rescued countless items which would have otherwise been lost to the future. In these turbulent times that history has never been more relevant - and the survival of the Library will depend on the generosity of our supporters.

‘The Library is a sort of treasure chest for a world that desperately needs to draw on ideals from the past in order to shape a better future. If we do our jobs to the best of our abilities it will be here and in good order for generations to come'
